Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj (other names Sambhaji Raje Bhosle, Shambhuraje) was the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Saibai. Sambhaji was born at Purandar fort near Pune India on 14 May 1657. Sambhaji was married to a Jivubai, renamed Yesubai, daughter of Pilajirao Shirke.
Sambhaji Maharaj was one of such rare kings, who wrote scholarly books. At the age of fourteen he has written Boodhbhushanam in Sanskrit. He has written three more books Nakshikha, Nayikabhed and Sat Shatak in Hindi. “While Boodhbhushanam talks about politics, governance and defense strategies, Nakshika and Nayika Bhed are based on how women have been perceived and idolized over the centuries.
He attacked on Burhanpur along with Hambirrao Mohite and defeated Mughals. He fought against Mughal and died at the age 31 on March 11, 1689 at Tulapur-Vadhu, Pune.
Sambhaji Maharaj Timeline
14 May 1657: Sambhaji was born at Purandar fort near Pune. His mother died when he was two years old and he was raised by his grandmother Jijabai (Shivaji Maharaj’s mother).
1666: Sambhaji was sent to live with Raja Jai Singh as political hostage.
20 July 1680: Coronation of Sambahji at Panhala fort
1686: Sambhaji invaded Mysore in 1686, accompanied by his friend Kavi Kalash.
1687: Maratha forces badly weakened by the Mughals in the Battle of Wai.The key Maratha commander Hambirao Mohite was killed in this war.
February 1689: Sambhaji and 25 of his advisors were captured by the Mughal forces of Muqarrab Khan in a skirish at Sangameshwar
11 March 1689: Sambhaji died at Tulapur-Vadhu near Pune
